Xanthones are Phytonutrients, which contain antioxidant properties. Antioxidants, as you probably know, are very good for you by helping your body fight free radical damage. There are approx. 200 types of Xanthones. One of these is Gamma Mangostin. It has been found to have a very anti-inflammatory effect. In a recent study, the mangosteen xanthone, Gamma Mangostin, showed positive results for being a COX 2 inhibitor.

Xanthones can be found in fruits and vegetables, but only in trace amounts. The mangosteen fruit contains the highest amount of Xanthones found in nature, 43. Most of this is found in the outer "peri-carp".
